Standing Tall

Savannah Welch's life was transformed Nov. 2, 2016, when she was pinned by a vehicle at the Wimberley Farmers Market. She was airlifted to Breckenridge Hospital, where doctors determined her right leg was beyond repair and needed to be amputated. "I remember laying on the ground waiting for EMS to get there," she says. "The very first thing, I looked at my leg. I was wearing skinny jeans, and my leg was just bulging. It was huge. I was in excruciating pain and had no idea what had happened."

Hometown Heroes

As the standard-bearers of the Houston music scene, the Suffers are also imaginatively grounded in place. The lively textures of their shared hometown animate Everything Here, their new album–from their musical interplay to their choice of guests (like Bun B and Paul Wall, who supply lighthearted spoken interludes) to expressions of empathy for a city still recovering from hurricane devastation.

Texas Tales: Joe Ely

When the Clash started kicking around with Joe Ely in the late'70s, they were drawn to the West Texas wild card who didn't like rules. Ely was a singer-songwriter who fit quite naturally with the outlaw country movement that had emerged in Austin.
